PRINCIPLES OF ANIMATION
THE ARC
What is an arc? An arc is a part of the circumference of a circle or other curve.
The path of an action is an "arc." Arcs are usually circular. Circular arcs can be seen in nature, and are more flowing and natural. For un natural movements you can use linear arcs. Mechanical objects often use linear arcs. I common use for arcs, is the movement of arms. Linear arcs can make your actions seem more powerful.
To make movements realistic and natural the arc is a necessary tool.
To make movements realistic and natural the arc is a necessary tool.
For example when someone shoots an arrow, it doesn't fly perfectly straight. Gravity causes objects in motion to arc between the start and end points.
Carrying the ball with an arched back shows that the ball is heavy, unlike the other example where the back is straight. Arcs can also be used to show depth.
The arm moving in an arc is more natural than the arm moving straight down.
This Mickey Mouse GIF is a great example of arcs. Mickey is doing many different movements, and almost all of them show the use of arc. His arms, feet, fingers, and even his face are all in moving in an arc motion.
